Working Toward More Just Outcomes in Language and Culture Studies: A Report and Resources from the 2023 DDGC Conference

David Gramling (University of British Columbia), Kiley Kost (Carleton College), and Ervin Malakaj (University of British Columbia)

The 2023 biennial DDGC Conference took place online on March 31–April 2, 2023, and was co-organized by David Gramling, Kiley Kost, and Ervin Malakaj. Titled, “Creating Just Outcomes and Assessments, Together (a.k.a. the “Hot”-comes Conference),” the event brought together 100 scholar practitioners in language and culture studies to interrogate, rethink, and dream up new ways of relating to outcomes and assessments.

The entire event was conceptualized as a series of workshops during which participants were prompted to think about specific components relating to outcomes and assessments as they are traditionally understood in our work environments. You can find the outline of the workshops listed on the conference program.

These workshops generated transformative discussions and discursive practices that yielded two documents. The first is a conference report, which features highlights from each of the sessions held over the course of the three conference days. The second is an outcomes and assessments document, which features various outcomes and assessments ideas that emerged during the conference.

You can find the documents here: Report & Outcomes/Assessments.

These are intended to be generative community resources. They were compiled by David Gramling on the basis of the many notes and ideas generated by the 100 participants (you can view the participant list at the top of the conference program page). For any questions about the documents, reach out to David Gramling (david.gramling@ubc.ca).
